Cahiers was created as the newsletter of the Association for French Language Studies in 1995 and was published in print form until 2003. It served firstly as a notice board for the activities of the Association, notifying of forthcoming conferences and workshops as well as disseminating other kinds of information, such as changes in membership of the Committee. It presented reports on workshops, conferences and book reviews and under the editorship of Stephen Noreiko (1995-1999), an amusing editorial mainly devoted to the quirks of French neologisms. From the outset, short refereed articles were included which may be consulted in the archive. In 2003 the decision was taken decided to go on-line, a move which pushed Cahiers more towards its role as an academic journal, particularly but by no means exclusively, encouraging the work of new researchers. Of course these days hot-news items and announcements of future activities are better placed on AFLS-NEWS but Cahiers still retains its news-letter function, by including reports on activities of the past year or reflective pieces on issues affecting the teaching of French and indeed modern languages more generally, particularly in universities.
